Telescopic Handler Training Course Outline
A telescopic handler is a machine widely used in construction and agriculture. It is similar in appearance and function to a forklift, with the increased versatility of a single telescopic boom that can extend forwards and upwards from the vehicle. On the end of the boom the operator can fit several different attachments such as a bucket, pallet forks, winch, hook etc.
In construction, the most common attachment for a telehandler is pallet forks, and the most common application is to move loads from place to place that would unreachable for a conventional forklift. Telescopic handlers have the ability to remove palletised loads from within a trailer and to place loads on rooftops and other high places. The latter application would otherwise require a crane, which is not always practical or time/cost efficient. The telescopic handler is now built in many sizes from small industrial, all terrain and 360 slew machines
A17C Telescopic Handler:
We offer telescopic Handler training courses for the novice operator, and the semi experienced operator that would benefit from telescopic handler training before they take the operator test.
For novice operators; CPCS and CITB recommend a minimum 5 day course. Semi experienced operator duration may vary dependent on the amount of operator experience.
Operator testing:
Generally we would recommend A17 CPCS telescopic handler training, this is the most widely accepted scheme in the construction industry, offering the operator better work opportunities.
NPORS is accepted on some construction sites, however at present we would recommend A17 CPCS telescopic handler training and testing.
A17C CPCS telescopic handler training is for the all sizes excluding 360 slew machine. A17 CPCS telescopic handler training prepares the operator for both the theory and practical test under CPCS. Operators that achieve the required standards will be awarded the all sizes excluding 360 slew category.
Telescopic Training Course Content
An A17 CPCS telescopic handler training course covers:
- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- (PUWER) Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations
- (LOLER) Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations
- Different types of telescopic handlers
- Basic construction
- Components
- The purpose and use of all controls
- How to comply with manufacturer instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook
- Checking the machine is serviceable and stable for safe operation prior to use
- Pre-start and operational checks
- Checking safety devices are functioning as per operational specification
- Operating and manoeuvring machine on level and uneven ground
- Changing forks to buckets and bucket to forks (quick hitch)
- Lifting, carrying and placing loads
- Stacking a load to a minimum of 3m high
- Load a simulated lorry
- How to stack and de-stack from the loading out tower
- How to manoeuvre the machine through a confined area
- Recognising and responding to given instructions
- Keeping within safe working parameters of the telehandler and other machines in the area
- Placing the telescopic handler in an out-of-service condition, to isolate and secure the machine
- Limitations of use when using the telehandler
The A17 telescopic handler course provides the operative with the skills and knowledge they require to successfully achieve the standards the A17 telescopic handler test requires.

Outcome
By the end of an A17 telescopic handler course, the operative will be able to:
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the regulations that apply to the safe use of telescopic handlers
- Carry out a full pre-start/shift check on the telescopic handler and record their findings
- Carry out a full operational check on the telescopic handler and record their findings
- Operate the telescopic handler in line with the manufacturer’s operators’ instructions/manual
- Correctly and safely manoeuvre the machine in a confined area
- Safely ascend and descend slopes
- Transport loads at a speed consistent with the load and general site conditions
- Stack and de-stack loads correctly and safely
- Load and offload a simulated lorry safely and efficiently
- Load and offload the loading out tower safely and efficiently
- Change buckets and forks safely and efficiently
- Keep within safe working parameters of the telescopic handler
- Place the telescopic handler in an out-of-service condition, to isolate and secure
- Understand the limitations of use when operating the telescopic handler
- Report any problems or defects
At the end of the A17 telescopic handler training course; the candidate should be able to achieve the required standards of the CPCS theory and practical test. If the candidate achieves the required standards of the CPCS test, then a red CPCS card will be awarded.

The Road Traffic Act
Operators, supervisors and managers will have a good understanding of the regulations that apply to the safe operation and use of the type of telehandler for which they are trained. Additionally, inspections and the need to keep a record of the checks carried out by the operator, and how to operate the machine as per the manufacturer recommendations.
