Site Manager Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS):

The 5-day SMSTS course provides project managers, site managers, supervisors, business proprietors and client-based personnel with the knowledge and skills to enable them to ensure healthy and safe conditions and compliance for construction site employees.

The SMSTS health and safety training course is one of the most highly regarded training courses within the construction industry and is, taken by more than 10,000 people each year.

The United Kingdom Contractors Group (UKCG) recognises the SMSTS training course as meeting the required standard for all managers working on UKCG sites.

SMSTS Pre-Entry Requirements

You must have a good understanding of spoken and written English. Please contact us if you have any concerns in this area.

SMSTS Assessments and Questions Papers:

The SMSTS training course is a highly interactive course delivered by PowerPoint, case studies, classroom discussion, group work and individual/group presentations. In addition you will be required to do some home study and revision outside of the course. You will be continuously assessed and required to successfully complete a multiple-choice test.

Delegates must attend all SMSTS training sessions, without full attendance the SMSTS training objectives will not be met, and an SMSTS certificate will not be awarded.

Course Content

A 5-day SMSTS training course covers:

Day one:

  • Questionnaire (what you know)
  • Facts on health and safety
  • Accident prevention
  • Health and safety systems
  • The Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Health and safety and the manager
  • SMSTS exercise 1: Implementing Health and Safety

Day two:

  • Report back and decision on SMSTS exercise 1
  • Working at height
  • The working environment
  • Management of contractors
  • Health and safety management of plant equipment and systems of work
  • Manager and supervisor responsibilities: SMSTS exercise 2

Day three:

  • Report back on SMSTS exercise 2
  • Health and Safety Management on site
  • Monitoring health and safety
  • SMSTS exercise 3: Site briefing

Day four:

  • Report back on SMSTS exercise 3
  • Health and safety communication training
  • Construction health and safety
  • SMSTS exercise 4: Site layout

Day five:

  • Final preparation of SMSTS exercise 4
  • Debrief and discussion SMSTS exercise 4
  • Examination
  • Debrief and discussion of SMSTS training course

Course Outcome

At the end of the 5-day SMSTS training course; delegates will be aware of, and able to:

  • Implement all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their daily work
  • Implement new guidance and industry best practice
    State their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment

At the end of the course, the candidate should have a good understanding of general health and safety in the workplace and be able to successfully take and pass the SMSTS examination on:
