Crane Supervisor Course

This crane supervisor course is suitable for supervisors and managers that have responsibility of supervising lifting operations.

The roles and responsibilities of all crane supervisors are to supervise lifting operations, supervision and execution of lifting operations as outlined in the code of practice, Safe Use of cranes BS7121. BS 7121 helps employers comply with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) when supervising and controlling lifting operations.

The role of the crane supervisor was first introduced by BS7121 part 1 as the competent person responsible for controlling and supervising safe systems of working lift operations.

To ensure a safe system of work; one person should be appointed as a crane supervisor to be in overall control of the lifting operation and to act on behalf of the organisation requiring the load to be lifted. The crane supervisor does not need to be an employee of the employing organisation; however, they must have adequate training, experience and have technical knowledge and experience to carry out the role competently.

The duties of the crane supervisor include:

Roles and responsibilities of lifting operations personnel

Thorough examination and certification

Crane appreciation

Lifting capacity and duties charts

Crane positioning and configuration

Selection and use of lifting accessories

Methods of communication

Checking and working to a risk assessment

Checking and working to a method statement

Briefing and supervising others involved in the lifting operation

Ensuring the correct selection of cranes are being used

Ensuring the correct selection of lifting gear is in use

Ensure only competent personnel are employed to carry out lifting operations

Check training/instruction has been carried out

Check inspection and maintenance records of lifting equipment has been carried out

Ensuring that there is an effective procedure for reporting defects and incidents and taking any necessary corrective action.

Implementing control and safety of the lifting operation

Crane supervisor training prepares the crane supervisor for both the theory and practical test. Candidates that achieve the required standards will be awarded a certificate of basic training.
