Skid Steer Loader Training
Skid steer loaders are typically four-wheel vehicles with wheels mechanically locked in synchronization on each side, and the left-side drive wheels can be driven independently of the right-side drive wheels. The wheels typically have no separate steering mechanism and hold a fixed straight alignment on the body of the machine. By operating the left and right wheel pairs at different speeds, the machine turns by skidding or dragging its fixed-orientation wheels across the ground.
The extremely rigid frame and strong wheel bearings prevent the torsional forces caused by this dragging motion from damaging the machine. The skid steering loader is turned by generating differential velocity at the opposite sides of the vehicle.
Today’s purpose skid steer loaders are derived from the agricultural tractor fitted with a small front shovel, hydraulically driven from the PTO (power take-off). Skid steer loaders are commonly used in basements and move stockpiles of material e.g. stone, rock, construction aggregate, sand, gravel, subsoil and deposit it into an awaiting lorry/dump truck.
Unlike in a conventional front loader; the lift arms in these machines are alongside the driver with the pivot points behind the driver’s shoulders. JCB has also introduced a tracked version of the skid steer loader to enable it to work on more difficult ground surfaces.

Skid Steer Loader Training
Industrial Training Services offer skid steer loader training courses for the novice operator or the semi-experienced operator that would benefit from skid steer loader training before they take an operator test. For novice operators, we recommend a minimum 3-day course.
Semi-experienced operator duration may vary dependent on the amount of experience the operator has. 1-day operator refresher training is for operators that have been previously certificated. Skid steer loader training is for all sizes of machine.
Skid steer loader training prepares the operator for both the theory and practical test. Operators that achieve the required standards will be awarded a certificate for skid steer loader category.

The skid steer loader training course provides the candidate with the skills and knowledge they require to successfully achieve the standards the skid steer loader operator test requires.
Course Outcome
On completion of a skid steer loader training course; operators will be able to:
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the regulations that apply to the safe use of a skid steer loader
- Carry out a full pre-start/shift check on the skid steer loader and record their findings.
- Carry out a full operational check on the skid steer loader and record their findings
- Operate the skid steer loader in line with the manufacturer’s instructions/manual
- Load a lorry/dump truck to capacity
- Safely ascend and descend slopes
- Level an area to a good standard
- Load a vehicle/hopper
- Keep within safe working parameters of the skid steer loader
- Place the skid steer loader in an out-of-service condition, to isolate and secure.
- Understand the limitations of use when operating the skid steer loader
- Report any problems or defects
At the end of the Skid steer loader training course, the candidate should be able to achieve the required standards of the theory and practical test. If the candidate achieves the required standards a certificate of basic training will be awarded for the skid steer loader.

Operators, supervisors and managers will have a good understanding of the regulations that apply to the safe operation and use of the type of skid steer loader for which they are trained. Additionally, they will understand inspections and the need to keep a record of the checks carried out by the operator and how to operate the skid steer loader as per the manufacturer recommendations.
