Appointed Person Course
The appointed person training course is suitable for supervisors and managers with responsibility for lifting operations.
The roles and responsibilities of all appointed persons for planning the lifting operation, supervision and execution of lifting operations are outlined in the code of practice, Safe Use of Cranes BS7121. BS 7121 helps employers comply with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) when using mobile cranes.
The role of the appointed person (AP) was first introduced by BS7121 part 1 as the competent person responsible for developing a safe system of work in lifting operation. To ensure a safe system of work, one person should be appointed to be in overall control of the lifting operation and to act on behalf of the organisation requiring the load to be lifted.
The appointed person need not be an employee of the employing organisation; however, they must have adequate training, experience and have technical knowledge to carry out the role competently.
The duties of the appointed person include:
The planning and assessment of the lifting operation to cover
Selection of cranes
Selection of lifting gear
Selection of competent personnel
Training/Instruction and supervision
Consultation with other interested bodies if necessary
Ensuring that adequate inspection and maintenance of lifting equipment has been carried out
Ensuring that there is an effective procedure for reporting defects and incidents and taking any
Necessary corrective action
Implementing control and safety of the lifting operation
Appointed person training prepares the appointed person for both the theory and practical test. Candidates that achieve the required standards will be awarded a certificate of basic training.

For novice appointed persons, we recommend a minimum 4 day course.
Semi-experienced training durations may vary dependent on past experience in the control of lift operations.
